Admission form from 1930. John remained at Cane Hill until his death on Wren Ward in 1988, at age 80. He had no known living relatives.
John escaped from Cane Hill twice - once in 1945 and again in 1950 when he was last seen on the football field. He was recaptured and taken to Chelsea Police Station and returned to the hospital.

John's medical certificate from Marylebone Workhouse is below. The 'facts indicating insanity' read as:
He is talkative and disconnected in conversation. He says that he could see the figure of a bird in the smoke from the chimney and that the bird grew larger and larger. He also saw the same figure in the cinder in the fireplace. He says he sees a face in the lampshade he thought it was that of his brother who made signs to him. He made a sketch of the face to show me.
S. Browning, mental attendant at St Marylebone Workhouse states that he was restless in the night, walking about and saying that he could see a face in the electric light looking down at him.
